The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon recently selected two winners in its Win a Trip to Boston drawing from those who ran Boston qualifying times in the March 2014 SAMM. One male and one female winner – Esther White of Waterford and Miguel Reyes of Fresno -- each take home $500, which they may use toward a trip to the 2015 Boston Marathon. Your Competition at the 2014 Modesto Marathon

Wondering who some of your competition is for Sunday’s 2014 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon? You might notice a lot of youngsters: there are 91 registered minors under the age of 18. The youngest are a pair of 12-year-olds, Gerardo Avalos of Ceres and Coby McCaig of Modesto. The youngest female competitors are 13 years old -- Maria Diaz and Dana Miranda, both of Ceres. Curious about who is running the 2014 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon so far? Well, one thing is for certain, there are more women than men. Women number 61% of runners and walkers, while men account for just 39%. As you could probably guess, most runners – 1,350 -- are from California, followed by Oregon with 8. Being fast will pay off at the 2014 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. We’ve expanded our purse to pay three deep in both the men’s and women’s races. First place in the marathon will pay $500, with $250 for second place and $100 for third. Half marathon winners will receive $250, $100 for second and $50 for third. The 5K will pay $100, $50 and $25. In addition, we are offering bonuses for setting course records. A new marathon record earns $500, half marathon $250 and 5K $100. As the Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon (SAMM) prepares to celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2014, changes are taking place behind the scenes. Race director Heidi Ryan is preparing to relinquish control of the event to Modesto businesswoman and ultra runner Vickie Chu-Hermis. Ryan will retain leadership for the March 2014 event, with Chu-Hermis shadowing her to make for an easier transition. So far, two of our past marathon winners have committed to running the 2013 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. Modestan Jon Olsen will be trying for his third victory in four years in preparation for running in the World 24-Hour competition in Holland later this year. Michelle Meyer, who is attending medical school in San Francisco, will be back to attempt to break her 2011 course record. Bart Yasso, known as Runner’s World Magazine’s “Chief Running Officer” since 1987, will be the featured guest speaker at the 2013 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon Pre-Race Dinner. He will also be at the SAMM Expo greeting the public and sharing his running wisdom and anecdotes. Yasso has coached thousands of marathon runners enrolled in the Runner’s World Challenge.
