Expo dinner guest speaker Dick Beardsley
Former elite runner and best-selling author Dick Beardsley will be the featured speaker and guest at the Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon Expo and Pasta Dinner Saturday, March 17, 2012, at the Modesto Center Plaza.
Now an inspirational speaker and running coach, Dick will regal his audiences with tales of his competitive running career, as well as his trials and tribulations through life, including a near-fatal accident, knee replacements and an addiction to prescription pain medication.
Dick is perhaps best known for a race he lost – the 1982 Boston Marathon – in which he finished two seconds behind winner Alberto Salazar in a contest often called one of the most memorable in marathon history. It was the closest finish ever at the world’s premier marathon, and both runners broke the course and American records. It was dubbed “Duel in the Sun,” which became the title of a book celebrating the famous run.
Dick’s best-selling autobiography, Staying the Course, recounts the race that changed his life, the difficult years that followed and his journey overcoming extreme obstacles, speaking to anyone who loves competition, who has survived catastrophe, or who has pursued a seemingly impossible goal.
Dick’s life is currently the subject of a feature film, Against the Wind. You can watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOUnJCHGSF4
Dick is the third fastest American born runner in the marathon, running 2:08:53 in the 1982 Boston Marathon. He is a two-time Olympic Trials Marathon qualifier, a two-time winner and course record holder of the Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota (2:09:36 in 1981), winner of the first London Marathon (2:11:48 in 1981), and is the course record holder for the Napa Valley Marathon (2:16:20 in 1987).
The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon pre-race Chicken & Pasta Dinner sponsored by Fuzio’s Universal Grill will be held Saturday, March 17, 2012, at the Modesto Center Plaza, 1150 9th St., at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at active.com or download a race application and select the dinner option. Tickets are $20 each. Seating is limited. Dick will also be at the SAMM Expo earlier in the day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., to meet and greet the public and sign copies of his book. The Expo is free, and both events are open to the public.
Dick is now living in Austin, Texas. He is host of the Dick Beardsley Marathon Running Camp, held each September in Waubun, MN, and hosts the Dick Beardsley Half Marathon in his hometown of Detroit Lakes, MN. He founded The Dick Beardsley Foundation to assist those suffering from chemical dependency who are unable to pay for a treatment program, and to educate the public on the disease while promoting healthy lifestyles.
